How to allow camera access on iPhone for a website
Short answer
For websites in Safari, go to Settings, then Apps, then Safari, tap Camera and choose Ask or Allow. For one site only, open it in Safari, tap the page menu button in the address bar, then Website Settings. If you use Chrome or another browser app, the switch is in Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Camera.
When a website asks for your camera
What happens when a website wants your camera depends on Safari’s camera setting. With Ask, Safari shows a prompt, and the site gets access if you tap Allow. With Allow, websites can use the camera without asking first. With Deny, they can’t use it. The microphone has the same three options.
If you said no by mistake, or no prompt appears, check the settings below first. A missing picture can have other causes, but a switched-off permission is the quickest thing to rule out, and there are only three places it can be.
Allow the camera for websites in Safari
Safari has one setting that covers every website you visit:
- Open Settings, then tap Apps, then Safari.
- Scroll down and tap Camera.
- Choose Ask or Allow.
- If you want to talk as well, tap Microphone and do the same.

Ask is the sensible middle: sites still need your OK, but they can get it. If this is set to Deny, websites can’t use your camera unless you’ve made an exception for a particular site, which is the next section.
Allow it for one website only
You can keep Ask for everything and make an exception for a site you trust:
- Open the website in Safari.
- Tap the page menu button in the address bar.
- Tap Website Settings.
- Under Website Settings For, set Camera to Ask or Allow, and Microphone too if you need it.
The exception applies to that site only; every other website keeps the general setting.
Using Chrome or another browser app
A browser that isn’t Safari needs two yeses: the iPhone has to let the browser use the camera, and then the website asks inside the browser.
- Open Settings, then Privacy & Security.
- Tap Camera and turn it on for Chrome (or whichever browser you use). Tap Microphone and do the same.
- Go back to the website. In Chrome, tap Allow when the site asks.
- To change it later in Chrome, tap the camera or microphone icon on the left of the address bar and turn the permission on. The icon only appears once you’ve changed that site’s permission before.
The list in Privacy & Security only shows apps that have asked for the camera. If your browser isn’t there, open a page that uses the camera in that browser first, then check again.
Still can’t allow it? Check these
- Screen Time. If Content & Privacy Restrictions are turned on in Screen Time, check that Camera is allowed there.
- The indicator dots. A green dot at the top of the screen means an app is using the camera; an orange dot means an app is using the microphone without the camera. It’s a quick way to see whether the camera is actually on.
- A fresh start for the page. After changing any of these settings, reload the website so it can ask again.
